Arrive in Bozeman, where you will be greeted and picked up for the scenic drive toward Cooke City and Skyline Guest Ranch. As you travel, the landscape slowly shifts from valley farmland into rugged mountain country, hinting at the wild week ahead. Keep your eyes open for early wildlife sightings along the way.

At Skyline Guest Ranch, you will settle into your room, meet the hosts, and have time to unpack and breathe in the mountain air. In the evening, gather around the table for your first home-cooked ranch dinner, featuring hearty comfort food and warm conversation.

After dinner, Mitch will lead a relaxed welcome session. You will go over the plan for the week, talk through gear, camera settings for wildlife, and what to expect from long, full days in the field. It is a gentle, grounding start before the early alarms begin.​​​

This is your first true field day, and it begins in the dark. Wake well before sunrise for hot coffee and a quick breakfast at the ranch, then head into Yellowstone toward the Lamar Valley. As the sky lightens, you will position yourselves to watch the day unfold in one of the most wildlife-rich valleys in North America. The focus this morning is on behavior and moments. Bison with calves, antelope moving through the sage, and the possibility of wolves pacing the valley are all on the list. With patience and quiet observation, you might also catch glimpses of foxes trotting along the hillsides or pausing to listen in the still air. You will spend the day following the light and the animals, stopping at pullouts and overlooks that give you the best vantage points. Lunch is a packed meal enjoyed near the car or at a quiet spot where you can keep your eyes on the landscape while you eat. As the sun drops lower in the sky, you will continue to work the evening light before returning to Skyline Guest Ranch for another delicious dinner. The night ends with time to review your images, charge batteries, and rest up for another full day.

Today we experience Yellowstone in a truly unique way as we leave the roads behind and venture into the park’s backcountry on horseback. This guided ride takes us through wild landscapes rarely seen by most visitors, offering a deeper and more peaceful way to experience the park. Traveling through open meadows, along winding creeks, and beneath towering mountain peaks, guests will enjoy incredible scenery and a true sense of Yellowstone’s untamed beauty. 
 

The day will also include time spent fly-fishing for native Yellowstone cutthroat trout in pristine mountain waters. Whether you are an experienced angler or trying fly-fishing for the first time, casting a line in these quiet backcountry streams is a memorable experience. Surrounded by wilderness and far from the busy roads of the park, the peaceful rhythm of the day allows time to slow down and truly take in the landscape. It is a special opportunity to experience Yellowstone in a way few visitors ever do.

Today we set out early for a full day exploring some of Yellowstone’s most iconic landscapes and wildlife habitats. Our morning will begin in Hayden Valley, one of the park’s most productive areas for wildlife viewing and photography, where herds of bison and other wildlife often move across the wide open valley. From there we will continue on toward Yellowstone Lake, where the expansive water and surrounding mountain scenery create dramatic photographic opportunities.

As the day warms and wildlife activity slows, we will make brief stops at Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring, two of Yellowstone’s most famous geothermal features. In the afternoon we will shift our focus back to wildlife photography as we make our way north through the park. The day will conclude with an evening in the iconic Lamar Valley, where the soft autumn light and active wildlife often create incredible photography opportunities.

One of the most exciting aspects of photographing Yellowstone is that no two days are ever the same, and today allows us the flexibility to pursue the best opportunities the season presents. We may revisit areas that have been particularly active for wildlife, search the valleys for predators on the move, or focus on scenic locations glowing with fall color across the Northern Range.

Venture high into the mountains along the historic Beartooth Highway, climbing to elevations of over 10,000 feet. These alpine environments offer breathtaking scenery and the potential to photograph higher elevation wildlife such as mountain goats and other species that inhabit the rugged peaks of the Beartooth Mountains.
 

In the evening, we will return to Skyline Guest Ranch for farewell dinner at the ranch and time to reflect and share of the adventures, photographs, and unforgettable wildlife moments that made this autumn experience in Yellowstone so memorable.

On your final morning, enjoy a lingering breakfast at Skyline Guest Ranch!
 

You will then load up for the drive back to Bozeman, offering one last drive through the breathtaking northern region of Yellowstone National Park.
