HER STORY
Julia Cook is a wildlife photographer, author, and photography guide whose work focuses on the animals and landscapes of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Growing up in Cody, Wyoming, just outside Yellowstone National Park, Julia developed a deep connection to the region’s wildlife from an early age. Years spent exploring the park, observing animals in their natural habitat, and studying the ecosystems of the Rocky Mountains helped shape both her artistic perspective and her passion for conservation.
Julia’s photography centers on capturing authentic moments in the wild while telling the deeper ecological stories behind the animals she photographs. Her goal is to create images that highlight the raw beauty of the American West while inspiring others to spend meaningful time in nature and develop a deeper appreciation for wildlife and wild landscapes. Ethical wildlife photography plays a central role in her work, and she strongly believes that animals should always be photographed respectfully and without interference so their natural behavior remains undisturbed.
Although Julia has spent countless hours photographing wildlife across North America, Yellowstone remains at the heart of her work. Her intimate knowledge of the park’s ecosystems, seasonal wildlife patterns, and animal behavior allows her to consistently create compelling images of the region’s iconic species. From wolves and grizzly bears to foxes, bison, and the smaller creatures that often go unnoticed, her photography reflects both patience in the field and a deep understanding of the landscape.
In addition to her photography, Julia is also an author. Her debut book, Wild Wonders: The Untamed and Enigmatic Animals that Inhabit Yellowstone National Park, combines wildlife photography with scientific insight and personal field stories that explore the ecology and behavior of Yellowstone’s animals. The book invites readers into the ecosystems of Yellowstone while sharing the experiences behind the images and the stories of the wildlife that inhabit the park.
Julia holds a degree in environmental science from the University of Wyoming, a background that strongly influences both her photography and her storytelling. By blending science, photography, and personal field experience, she aims to help people better understand the complex ecosystems that make Yellowstone one of the most extraordinary wildlife habitats in the world.
Today, Julia spends much of her time in the field photographing wildlife, working on long-term photography projects, and guiding photography workshops for aspiring wildlife photographers. Through her work as a guide and instructor, she helps others develop both technical photography skills and a deeper understanding of animal behavior and natural history.
Julia partners with Skyline Safari and Skyline Guest Ranch to lead immersive wildlife photography workshops and guided photo tours in Yellowstone National Park. These experiences allow guests to explore some of the most wildlife-rich areas of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem while learning fieldcraft, wildlife photography techniques, and ethical practices for photographing animals in the wild.
