DAY 2
Into Yellowstone’s Northern Range
This is your first true field day, and it begins in the dark. Wake well before sunrise for hot coffee and a quick breakfast at the ranch, then head into Yellowstone toward the Lamar Valley. As the sky lightens, you will position yourselves to watch the day unfold in one of the most wildlife-rich valleys in North America. The focus this morning is on behavior and moments. Bison with calves, antelope moving through the sage, and the possibility of wolves pacing the valley are all on the list. With patience and quiet observation, you might also catch glimpses of foxes trotting along the hillsides or pausing to listen in the still air. You will spend the day following the light and the animals, stopping at pullouts and overlooks that give you the best vantage points. Lunch is a packed meal enjoyed near the car or at a quiet spot where you can keep your eyes on the landscape while you eat. As the sun drops lower in the sky, you will continue to work the evening light before returning to Skyline Guest Ranch for another delicious dinner. The night ends with time to review your images, charge batteries, and rest up for another full day.

DAY 3
Hayden Valley, Yellowstone Lake & Beyond
Today we set out early for a full day exploring some of Yellowstone’s most iconic landscapes and wildlife habitats. Our morning will begin in Hayden Valley, one of the park’s most productive areas for wildlife viewing and photography, where herds of bison and other wildlife often move across the wide-open valley. From there, we will continue on toward Yellowstone Lake, where the expansive water and surrounding mountain scenery create dramatic photographic opportunities.
As the day warms and wildlife activity slows, we will make brief stops at Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring, two of Yellowstone’s most famous geothermal features. In the afternoon, we will shift our focus back to wildlife photography as we make our way north through the park. The day will conclude with an evening in the iconic Lamar Valley, where the soft autumn light and active wildlife often create incredible photography opportunities.

DAY 4
Alpine Peaks & Autumn Colors
Today, we’ll venture high into the alpine country of the Beartooth Mountains in search of mountain goats and birds of prey, while taking advantage of some of the most spectacular landscape photography opportunities in the region. After making our way to the summit of Beartooth Pass, we’ll travel down the scenic Chief Joseph Highway, where brilliant fall colors transform the aspen groves into shades of gold and orange. Here, we’ll spend time searching for moose, hoping to photograph these magnificent animals against the vibrant autumn backdrop.
We’ll return to the ranch for an early dinner then back into Yellowstone’s iconic Lamar Valley for an evening of wildlife photography, seeing what animals are active as the sun begins to set.
Once back at the ranch, we’ll gather for a mid-trip photo review and editing session with Julia. This will be a great opportunity to review images captured so far, receive personalized feedback, ask questions, and pick up new editing techniques to put into practice during the remainder of the expedition. And, of course, we’ll enjoy a delicious homemade dessert while we’re at it.

DAY 5
Final Field Day
One of the most exciting aspects of photographing Yellowstone is that no two days are ever the same, and today allows us the flexibility to pursue the best opportunities the season presents. We may revisit areas that have been particularly active for wildlife, search the valleys for predators on the move, or focus on scenic locations glowing with fall color across the Northern Range.
Venture high into the mountains along the historic Beartooth Highway, climbing to elevations of over 10,000 feet. These alpine environments offer breathtaking scenery and the potential to photograph higher elevation wildlife such as mountain goats and other species that inhabit the rugged peaks of the Beartooth Mountains.
In the evening, we will return to Skyline Guest Ranch for farewell dinner at the ranch and time to reflect and share of the adventures, photographs, and unforgettable wildlife moments that made this autumn experience in Yellowstone so memorable.

DAY 6
Farewell Breakfast & Return
On your final morning, enjoy a lingering breakfast at Skyline Guest Ranch!
You will then load up for the drive back to Bozeman, offering one last drive through the breathtaking northern region of Yellowstone National Park.
By the time you arrive in Bozeman, your memory cards will be full, your skills sharpened, and a part of your heart firmly rooted in this incredible corner of the world.
